June 17, 2010 - NOTICE: This item requires immediate attention - please read now, and make a note to call in on June 23, 2010!

Dear NABJC Members,

"Just a little note to say "THANKS!" for answering the plea to sign on to the letter to US Senator Tom Coburn requesting his support of H.R. 5143, “The National Criminal Justice Commission Act”. Letters were emailed and faxed, as requested, to him on or before June 8, 2010! Together, and on one accord, we can accomplish great things!!

Yet, there’s more work to do for passage of the National Criminal Justice Commission Act. Again, we need your help! At this phase, we are asked to make phone calls.

June 23rd is the National Call-In Day to request support from Senators Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell and Richard Durbin. Click here to download full details and phone numbers (provided by the Justice Roundtable Committee, D.C.)."

Sincerely, Faye Tucker, NABCJ Legislative Liaison

May 25, 2010 - NOTICE: This item requires immediate attention - please read and respond to Reginald Hines today!

HR 5143 is a bill to establish the national Criminal Justice Commission, which may be cited as the “National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2010.  According to HR 5143, there has not been a comprehensive study since the President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration and Justice was established in 1965.  Our US Senator, Tom Coburn, needs some persuasion; therefore, we need to become busy in making an outreach.  Amongst the attachments below is a letter to him for ‘sign on’.  There is a deadline of June 8 to deliver the letter to Senator Coburn.  We should have our info back to Mr. Hines prior to the 8th. If you wish to participate, contact Reginald Hines at reginald.hines@doc.state.ok.us. The bill and proposed letter to Senator Coburn may be downloaded using the below links:

Faye Tucker of All of Us Or None-OK recently reported that our DA, while addressing a crowd of approximately 30 people, provided wrongful information about when a felon in the State of Oklahoma could vote.  Faye's organization researched and found documentation to show the DA his error, and he has since apologized.  Faye sent us the origin of the documentation. Family Connections: The Oklahoma Chapter of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice has a new committee called Family Connections.  This committee was formed as a result of the changing times we live in and the fact that more and more of us are being impacted by the incarceration of  family members – sons, daughters, parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles.   Personally, this was a very difficult period in my life, one that I  never dreamt I would face, as I am in law enforcement.    Although my son was incarcerated for only nine months, it seemed like a lifetime.  I can’t begin to tell you about the many emotions I went through, from  embarrassment to  avoidance of people, heartbrokenness, guilt and the list goes on.

We, as a committee, may not have all the answers, but can offer support and  share our experience with other fellow employees to include the things  to know and to expect. If you feel you can contribute to this committee, come connect with us.   For more information or to sign up, Please contact me, the committee chair at pam.ramsey@doc.state.ok.us or 405-425-2506.
